Are you fascinated by dog behavior? Have you ever wanted to be a dog trainer? Then the Greater St. Louis Training Club’s Dog Behavior and Training Basics Course may be perfect for you. Designed for those interested in becoming dog trainers, volunteer trainers for the club, or just interested in dog behavior; the Dog Behavior and Training Basics Course exposes students to the latest in the cutting-edge science of canine behavior and psychology!
The full course consisting of 6 class sessions, one session per month, is taught twice a year. Students can start at any time during the 6 sessions and make up any missed classes during the next class offering. Using this format, students can expect to complete the course in a minimum of 6 months if starting at Session 1.
Taught by Certified Professional Dog Trainers – Knowledge Assessed and graduates from the Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training & Behavior, this course teaches the fundamentals of applied animal science, ethology, dog and clicker training, and includes apprenticeship with experienced trainers and assistant work.
The Dog Behavior and Training Basics Course includes topics such as:
- Learn to effectively teach R+ clicker training methods
- The science of learning
- Canine ethology
- Animal husbandry
- Coaching people
In addition to rigorous classroom work, students apprentice in classes taught by GSLTC trainers. Students can register to start the course at any time, and after completing the course, can apply to become volunteer assistant trainers with the GSLTC, and possibly progress to head trainer status. (All current trainers who teach and assist our public classes have completed the Dog Behavior and Training Basics Course.)
