Stinky Dogs and Dawn Soap: The Secret Formula

Posted on April 26, 2013 by Beth Newcom in Blog 1 Comment

We’ve all been there when our dogs just drop on a walk and roll around in something that doesn’t smell too good.  Recently one of our trainers wrote an email, upset that her dog rolled in somebody else’s business in her backyard.  She tried everything to remove the smell from her dog, but unfortunately with no results.  She wrote:

Oh my! One of my dogs rolled in something in the grass … this evening in the backyard and smells to high heaven!  We’ve bathed her, and in the process, managed to get the smell all over ourselves.  I tried shampoo, Dawn soap, lemon juice and tomato juice to no avail.  She still stinks and now we do too. Suggestions??

Quick to the rescue, another one of our trainers wrote back with the following recipe – a magic formula that will make stinky dogs smell like roses.  We wanted to blog about it for everyone to read.  If you try this recipe at home, let us know how successful it is in helping your dog stay clean!

1 quart hydrogen peroxide
1-2 teaspoons Dawn
1/4 cup baking soda
Mix ingredients with lukewarm water- amount depends on size of dog. Let it sit on your dog for about 5 minutes, then rinse. You might have to repeat it to get all of the odor. Be sure your dog has no open wounds, doesn’t get it in her/his eyes, or drinks it.   Good luck!
